Brian Wilson Won't Audition Until He's 100 Percent

Oct 5, 2014 9:49 PM

Brian Wilson is recovering from Tommy John surgery and doesn't plan on working out for interested teams until he's fully ready.

"He won't let anyone look at him until he's completely ready to go," said a National League scout. "I think everyone is anxious to see when that time comes, because if he gets it back to what he used to be, he's going to help someone immediately down the stretch of a pennant race."

The Detroit Tigers might be in need of a reliever and a return to the San Francisco Giants can't be ruled out.

Nationals, Desmond Have Discussed Extension

Oct 31, 2014 10:27 AM

The Washington Nationals have discussed a potential contract extension with infielder Ian Desmond this spring.

Desmond agreed to a one-year, $3.8 million contract for 2013 to avoid arbitration earlier this offseason.

However, it doesn't seem likely that the two sides will reach an agreement before Opening Day on Monday.

All parties declined to comment on talks.

Kershaw Next In Line For Huge Extension

Oct 31, 2014 3:42 PM

In the wake of the Justin Verlander and Felix Hernandez contract extensions, Clayton Kershaw stands next in line to cash in.

Kershaw is earning $11 million this season with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Pressed on whether negotiations between his agent, Casey Close, and the Dodgers had advanced on an extension, Kershaw opened his mouth, closed it, then offered, "You know, I don't want to talk about it."

Lucrative Extensions Bad News For Free-Spending Clubs

Oct 5, 2014 9:48 PM

We have seen a wave of lucrative contract extensions this offseason, which doesn't bode well for free-spending teams like the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Teams can afford such extensions because of increased television revenue, while the pool of All-Star free agents has diminished. Over the last decade, the Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers have added talent through free agency.

Of the top 25 Major League players, as ranked by ESPN's Baseball Tonight, all but two are signed through at least the 2015 season.

Rockies Cut Hernandez, Keep Torrealba

Oct 5, 2014 7:38 PM

The Rockies have designated Ramon Hernandez for assignment.

They could be responsible for his $3.2 million salary if they are unable to trade him.

Hernandez, 36, signed a two-year, $6.4 million contract before last season. He hit only .217 with five homers and 28 RBIs in 52 games for the Rockies in 2012.

The Rockies purchased the contract of Yorvit Torrealba on Friday to be their backup catcher.

Ellsbury Isn't Against Discussing Extension During Season

Nov 22, 2014 9:18 AM

Jacoby Ellsbury, who will be a free agent after the 2013 season, says he wouldn't find in-season discussions to be a distraction.

Ellsbury pointed out that a large part of the talks would be between his agent, Scott Boras, and the Boston Red Sox front office.

"I know that [the Red Sox] talk [to Boras] not just about me but other guys [on the team]. I know there's always that constant communication. But if there's something to be discussed regarding me and the future, that's when it's brought to my attention — not every little conversation," said Ellsbury. "There might be talks that I won't know every little detail, but if there's something, a decision to be made, that's when I would get involved and go from there."

Ellsbury suggests that he has loved the experience of playing in Boston and with the Red Sox, the organization that made him its first-round pick in 2005 and with whom he has now played his entire career.

"Being the team that drafted me in 2005, the team I first got to play for, they've given me the opportunity. I got to win a World Series my first year. I've been playing for a great, storied franchise. I couldn't ask for anything more," he said.

"I definitely have been very grateful and very excited to put on a Red Sox uniform every single day. I feel very fortunate to have done that for my whole career. It's pretty neat. It's been eight years — not a lot of people can say they've been in the same uniform for eight years. That's pretty special for me."
